In a male condom - dominated society, it's easy to forget that there are also condom options for the ladies. When it comes to practicing safe sex, there are many forms of contraception available. The female condom, also known as the femidom, is increasing in popularity, and has given the term "wrap it up" an entirely new meaning.

What is a female condom?

Planned Parenthood offers a comprehensive definition of a female condom:

The female condom is a pouch that is used during intercourse to prevent pregnancy and reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases. It has flexible rings at each end. Just before vaginal intercourse, it is inserted deep into the vagina. The ring at the closed end holds the pouch in the vagina. The ring at the open end stays outside the vaginal opening during intercourse. And during anal intercourse, it is inserted into the anus.

How do you use a female condom?

The female condom is a viable backup option, and provides protection against sexually transmitted infections. Femidoms are a good option for couples who do not use male condoms. They are available in synthetic nitrile (essentially, a synthetic rubber, optimal for those with latex allergies, and less noisy than its polyurethane predecessor.)

When used correctly, only 10 out of 100 women using a female condom will get pregnant.

Where can I get female condoms?

FC2 costs about $4 and can be purchased at most pharmacies and local drug stores.

As we know, condoms are the most effective preventative method against STDs, HIV and unplanned pregnancies. The use of contraceptives guarantees safety and exhibits responsibility during sexual intercourse. Although the male condom is the more common form of protection, a girl can never be too safe!
