Started as a way to debunk the “tight jeans alibi,” which references a 1998 Italian Supreme Court decision to overturn a rape conviction, stating that the teenage victim’s jeans were too tight, Denim Day has spread internationally, carrying the message that there is no excuse for sexual assault.

Over 5 million people have registered for the event, where participants are encouraged to wear denim in support of the cause.

“Wear jeans with a purpose, support survivors, and educate yourself and others about sexual assault.”

Carrying the tagline “there is no excuse, and never an invitation to rape,” the organization has put together a massive event hoping to begin a conversation about the existence of sexual violence plaguing our communities. Guess, U.S.A. is the fashion sponsor for the event,  and plans to dress their mannequins and windows in all denim, plastering messages across their displays to help promote the cause.

With an opportunity to share their experiences with sexual assault, Denim Day founder and Peace Over Violence Executive Director Patricia Giggans hopes that participants and others will continue to engage actively in the fight against sexual violence, and the shame and the taboo surrounding sexual assaults.
